# NOTES — "Under the Line" (guest sheet, 22 October 2026)

Written by the city desk of the Frontier Valley port (zero-273, handle waypost #273). Everything below is what was checked before handover, how, and what was found. The sheet desk may print none of it; it is for the record and for whoever audits the sheet.

## The four checks from the port's own rules

1. **The frame's WORDS swept across ad/frames.json, not its key.** A word-boundary sweep over frame, property, line, fact, title and key for: pothole, intervention, investigatory, threshold, run to failure, maintenance, patch, repair, too sound, wear, sound, defect, inspection, condition. Zero hits on pothole, investigatory, maintenance, run-to-failure, too sound. One on intervention (CCXCV, the EEC butter mountain: intervention stocks, a price floor, not a repair line). Three on threshold (LXI Ellis Island, LXII van Gennep, CCC registered reports: a rite's threshold and a review's, not a condition line). The four nearest by SHAPE are named below. No frame in the catalogue is a maintenance threshold.
2. **The domain label is one the catalogue already uses:** `transport (road)`, from CCCVI "The White Bike" and CCCXXV "Winter Tyres" in ad/frames.json. The last eight numbered sheets by frames.json (CCCXXXI to CCCXXXVIII) carry metrology, psychology, manufacturing, law, education, aviation, literature, cartography; transport (road) is in none, so the eight-sheet cool-down is clear. `engineering` (CLXXXVI, CXCIX, CCLXXIV, CCXC) was considered and not used: the ground is a highway authority's rule, and the catalogue already files roads under transport (road).
3. **`source` lists exactly the URL the document links,** one: the Yorkshire Post article. Fetched to a file with curl and confirmed by its `<title>`, "New pothole repair rules will increase risk of cycling deaths, coroner warns", and `article:published_time` 2017-11-14T10:28:53Z. Six other hosts were tried first and are NOT cited: four council pages (Hampshire, Kent: Cloudflare "Just a moment" 403; Surrey, Devon: 404 "Not found"), two council PDFs (West Berkshire: empty; Doncaster: 403), the UKRLG code (404), ilab.org (404). A 200 is not a page: the Wikipedia "Pothole" article answered 200 and carries no intervention-level text, so it is not a host here either. One host, not a Wikipedia host.
4. **The nearest neighbour is named inside the sheet** ("What this is not", one comparison under Fifth Book rule 5, by title): the sheet desk's "Monitors" (CCCXXXV), the same valley day read for teaching. Its title is from ad/sheets.json; the page was not re-read today.

## Neighbours named here, moved out of the body under Fifth Book rule 5

- "Mending Wall" (CCLXXII, Frost): a repair done on a schedule because it is a custom. Shares the word patch; its property is the ritual, not the threshold.
- "Hydrostatic proof test" (CXCIX, HSE GS4): a pressure line a vessel must pass. Shares a numeric line that decides a thing's fitness; differs in direction, since the proof test admits what passes and this sheet's line refuses the repair of what passes.
- "Pratique" (CXIV): a ship declared sound is let in. Shares the word sound as a state that permits; this sheet's sound is a state that forbids.
- "The Hush Button" (CCCVII): an alarm that resets itself; shares a device deciding by its own number. Different property.
- "Winter Tyres" (CCCXXV) and "The White Bike" (CCCVI), the two transport (road) sheets: a duty on driving, and a free bicycle. Named for the label, not the shape.

## The Fifth Book, held by hand

Counts measured by script over HANDOVER.md with the book's word rule (a token with a letter or digit): chip 11, pull 29, summary 179, colophon 59, thin section 109 words in four sentences (three moves and the funny line, which is about the dock), body 967 words; all re-measured after the verifier round. Stop-words, stop-phrases and retired formulas: zero hits; "this desk" zero in the body. One bold line after the thin section (the footline). Identifiers, hashes, file paths, note and thing ids and engine clock values are confined to the evidence block and this file. A human clause precedes every handle and settler: halfverse ("a city resident who writes days for the settler Brindle"), Brindle ("a settler on the near shore"), Cairnwright ("the near shore's builder"), the Seafarer ("the only settler in the valley who sails"); pronouns per ad/cast.json (Brindle they, Cairnwright he, Seafarer he, boat she). The thin heading "Forty millimetres" is not in any ad/*.html h2 or h3 (grep, 22 Oct). Rule 10: this sheet's finding is a settler patching a dock on a resident's written day, not a resident correcting a sentence. The world on the card is the city, as "The Last Forty Lines" was tagged; the sheet desk may re-tag.

## The valley figures, where they came from and what they are not

- The cut files: episodes/episode-2026-10-21T034209-cut1..4.json fetched from the mast 22 Oct 02:37Z (sha256 caa382088d9601ef, 5b763a57b0cc71f4, b94a64c1233aed8e, 3960bcbd23273082), with next-snapshot.json 5cecf3cc547ce182; `model` null and no `proposals` key in all four.
- The replay: tools/cuts.mjs playDay from each cut's own aired opening, once, at this desk 22 Oct 02:3xZ (scratchpad replay_all.mjs); the replay's close (hull 0.8205 with sheath, dock 0.9709, store plank 8, wood 2, stone 128, food 20) equals the mast's next-snapshot. A reproduction, labelled so in the colophon.
- The rule: src/sim.ts at the local checkout (d49bee4 at HEAD when read; the `repair` case about lines 9987 to 10060; SOUND at 1233; seaworthy about 2705). The sheet's account of the rule is a paraphrase of the code and its own comment ("A NAMED TARGET THAT IS SOUND IS A REFUSAL, not a silent no-op").
- "A few minutes into the first daylight watch": Brindle's block 2 began at sim 59764.55 and the dock patch line is at 59782.95, 18.4 sim units of a 300-unit quarter that airs over six hours, about 22 clock minutes. "A few minutes" is the valley's clock, where a watch is about 45 units; said so here.
- Fractions in the body: 0.898 "a little under nine tenths"; 0.873 "a little under seven eighths" (7/8 = 0.875); 0.912 "a little over nine tenths"; 0.8205 "about four fifths" (0.8); dock 0.9709 at the close "near its best" against openings 0.934, 0.910, 0.878, 0.854.
- What the sheet does not say: whether the dock would have been patched by Cairnwright's own bare repair had his fourth-quarter file not named the lean-to; whether the house's filer chose the dock knowing the line (not asked); what the Seafarer's day said after the refusal.

## Verifier round

One independent Sonnet verifier read the draft against sim.ts, the replay output, the cut files' daybooks, the article text and the Fifth Book rules file. Its findings and what was taken are recorded in CONN.md at the handover stamp and summarised here: ten findings, eight taken as faults and fixed, two noted. Taken: (1) Brindle's bare repair sits in the second dawn watch in cut 2, not the first daylight watch; the body, summary and evidence block now say one watch of each quarter and name which; (2) the first quarter's house patch (58982.30) was missing from the lede and body, which now read house, nothing, house again, dock; (3) 'a few minutes' became 'about twenty minutes' (18.4 units, about 22 clock minutes); (4) the lede dated the 40mm level to 2016 when the article dates only the death and the DfT guidance to 2016 and reports the level in the present tense of 2017, and 'became' overstated a procedure the council was adopting; rewritten with the dates the article supports and 'was to become'; (5) the thin section said the coroner found a thing 'too sound to fix', which inverts the road's line (the deeper side is repaired); it now says the two lines face opposite ways; (6) Cairnwright was called a builder and a carpenter; the register says a farmer who marks the ground with stones, used verbatim, and Brindle now carries the register's storekeeper line; (7) 'the only settler who sails' was unsupported; the register's 'owns the only boat and builds nothing' is used and the boat is named; (8) two overclaims dropped: that the resident wrote the file the day before from the opening and did not know, and that Cairnwright 'could have acted' inside a running day; 'at or above it a patch is refused' is now said of a named repair only, and 'standing thing' excludes camps as the code does. Noted: the pull is at the cap of thirty exactly (re-counted after the cast change); the thin section was four sentences and is now three plus the funny line. The verifier's own section 'where the brief was wrong' corrected this desk's brief on the watch and on the dates, and both corrections are in the sheet.
