# Lane notes — CCXXXVIII, "The Great White North" (the-great-white-north.html)

Frontier record desk, 17 September 2026. Labels: MEASURED (this session, instrument named), CARRIED, INFERRED.

The keeper, direct, ~13:4xZ (`date -u` read 13:44:50Z at the first command of the session): "Write a sheet about 'the great white north', i think the frame kindof comes along with the ride". Read as: the subject is the land of that name in the cloud world, and the frame is the thing the name is borrowed from, Bob and Doug McKenzie's Great White North on SCTV. The frame was chosen from the keeper's words before any screen was read. Domain television, last used at CLXI (76 sheets back) and CLXVI under waiver; no waiver needed tonight. World cloud, the fourth cloud sheet in two days; one a day is the third book's rule and yesterday's second was at the keeper's word; today's is the first.

Practice in travel:trail: 26."; **11:23:18Z "Harfoot: Hail, Wayfarer! Harfoot has walked the long trail from the Shire to see the Great White North with his own eyes!"**; 11:29:18Z Harfoot auto-rest one minute outdoors; 13:48:07Z Scout travel completed. Scout's queue paused twice: 13:48:49Z step 10 and 13:49:17Z step 2, "Water or a cliff blocks this route."
- Scout's own events: travel to southlands started 13:45:10Z completed 13:45:20Z; Frontier Valley 13:45:49Z→13:45:57Z; northlands 13:46:27Z→13:46:35Z; north of northlands 13:47:00Z→13:47:10Z; the great white north 13:47:42Z→13:48:07Z ("completion in 26 seconds").
- **13:52:14Z** (me-scout-3.json). Scout at (7,6). rooms **503** of 1,024 (land 471, water 32); biomes marsh 186, woodland 127, pinewood 91, highland 88, meadow 11; buildings 0; elevations 0 in 204 rooms up to 205. Scout's exploration of region-0--3: 28 rooms. Seventh region event 13:50:53Z "Scout: Surveyed the great white north: 5 biomes. Rocky highlands = best stone/ore (up to 36 stone+22 ore) … Broadleaf woodland = best wood".
- World total: 5×64 + 3×256 + 1,024 = **2,112 rooms; 1,024 / 2,112 = 48.5%.**
- **The 13:48Z row of the sheet's table (168 rooms, 96 marsh) is read from the Scout session's own saved screen** `Testers/Scout/me_gwn_land.json` (serverTime 1789652897xxx = 13:48:17Z, same instrument, another hand), parsed here. Position (5,31). The 13:49Z read at this desk is 66 s later.
- Rules (`fv.mjs rules`, 88,554 B, 75 keys, 157 commands, 13:5xZ): `founding` — "The origin and four cardinal neighbours are 8x8. Everywhere else uses square world rings: let layer=max(2,abs(x),abs(y)), giving 16x16 throughout ring 2, 32x32 in ring 3, 64x64 in ring 4, and so on. … Minimum quality rises with every size tier: Q1 at 8×8, Q2 at 16×16, Q4 at 32×32 … Surveys beyond 16x16 require community metallurgy. … The founder issues claim with the recorded settings after funding. A road or dock and owned boat are still required. … Sparse rooms are deterministic and materialize as explored; current supported side limit is 65536." `biomes` — six for new lands: meadow, broadleaf woodland, pine country, marshland, rocky highlands, dry badlands; "New rooms are deterministic and persist when explored". The word "white" occurs 0 times in the rulebook, "snow" 0. `regionalTravel`: "15 seconds * (source side + destination side)/16 before transport quality, repeated practice…" — the sheet does NOT compute a base against the 26 s crossing (first draft said "twice the base"; wrong; cut).
- "community metallurgy" is paraphrased in the sheet ("metallurgy the world as a whole has reached") because *community* is on the third book's stop-list.

## The survey ledger (this record's own read, 16 Sep 16:32:40Z, for CCXXXVI — ad/notes/no-matter-how-small.md; re-read there today, not re-measured: the survey object no longer exists)

- founder wayfarer, direction north, name "the great white north", access shared, size 32, quality "4", cost wood 128 / stone 96 / plank 60 / brick 30 / iron 15. Contributions: Scout wood 121 + plank@4 27; Briar stone@4 73; Meridian stone@4 23, brick@4 12, iron@4 6; Copilot wood 7. No entry for wayfarer, Atlas or Launch scout. The same object, with the same figures, is in `Testers/Scout/me_full.json` (serverTime 16 Sep 16:30:55Z), read here today.
- Scout's own event 14 Sep 18:18:47Z (from the same 16 Sep read): "Great white north survey status: wood 128/128 done, stone 96/96 done, plank 30/60, brick 12/30, iron 0/15 (blocked - no forge here yet)…" — the forge at 18:39:58Z is 21 min 11 s later.
- **When wayfarer opened the survey is NOT measured.** Earliest trace in any file this house can reach: Scout's 14 Sep 18:18Z event. Wayfarer's own screen is the keeper's.
- Funding-to-claim: 18:19:26Z → 01:39:04Z = 7 h 19 min 38 s ("seven hours and twenty minutes").
- The final funding split (plank 60, brick 30, iron 15) is Scout's announcement; the completed ledger was never read by this desk. The sheet says "by Scout's account to the room".

## Scout's report (CARRIED, cross-session message from the Scout session ~13:5xZ; checked against the screens)

- "roughly 500 of 1024 rooms" — 503 at 13:52Z here. "Both Harfoot and wayfarer were physically present in the region on arrival" — matches people at 13:49Z. "impassable marsh-pool water blocker around x=3-6/y=19-22" — the two queue pauses. "the valley↔northlands landbridge … is now live" — connections water:false entry, matches. "the region is founded by and owned by wayfarer, not any settler — the team funded it, they don't own it" — owner field matches; the sheet says so. Not printed: the specialist pattern (Briar quarrying, Meridian smelting, Scout carpentry) — Scout's reading, not a measurement.

## The frame (MEASURED, pages opened 13:4xZ–13:5xZ)

- Wikipedia, Bob and Doug McKenzie: created by Moranis and Thomas; "Great White North" debuted 19 September 1980 in the third season on CBC; CBC asked for "specifically identifiably Canadian content"; the show "taped in Canada, with a mostly Canadian cast and crew, for two years"; "a parody that would incorporate every aspect of the humorous stereotype of Canadians"; segments filmed at day's end "with just Thomas and Moranis and a single camera operator", largely improvised; Moranis: "We went on the stage with no preparation, and did 15 [sketches]. Two of them were lousy…"; Thomas: "Rick and I used to sit in the studio, by ourselves – almost like happy hour – drink real beers, cook back bacon, literally make hot snack food for ourselves while we improvised and just talked. It was all very low key and stupid, and we thought, 'Well, they get what they deserve. This is their Canadian content. I hope they like it.'"; "To their shock, the comedians found that this filler material had become the most popular part of the show"; NBC "specifically cited good affiliate feedback on the 'two dumb Canadian characters'"; originally "Kanadian Korner"; album 1981 platinum, Grammy nomination, Billboard top 10; Strange Brew (1983) $8.5M on $4M; "heavy winter clothing and tuques".
- Wikipedia, Second City Television: CBC season 1980–81, 30-minute episodes, after Global dropped it "due to high production costs"; "the CBC network's request that the show feature two minutes of 'identifiably Canadian content' in every episode"; "American shows were two minutes shorter than Canadian ones (to allow more commercials)"; "In May 1981, NBC picked up SCTV in a 90-minute format"; "the most popular sketch in the program's eight-year history" though "intended as throw-away filler".
- The Canadian Encyclopedia, Rick Moranis (Tom Murray, published 16 Sep 2010, edited 16 Dec 2013): "two-minute 'Great White North' segments, developed to satisfy Canadian content regulations"; "platinum-selling Great White North, which won the 1982 Juno for best comedy album and was nominated for a Grammy Award"; Strange Brew "a smash hit in Canada". The Canadian Encyclopedia's own "Bob and Doug McKenzie" URL answered 404; its "SCTV" entry (Allan M. Gould) holds only "dropped out of SCTV early, owing to the phenomenal success of their parody of 2 Canadian hicks".
- Not verified and not printed: what the set consisted of (a map of Canada, etc.). The sheet says only what the articles say (winter clothing, toques, beer, back bacon, one camera).

## Register and caps

- voice.mjs after the second pass: 1,942 words, mean sentence 21.8, under-nine 24.7%, numerals 52.5/1000 (ceiling 60), em dashes 0, ALL-CAPS runs 5, thin section 144 words, opens off the formula. **Title-word recurrence 32 against 12**: "north" stems into northlands and the land's name is the subject; a label, not a frame, by the skill's own reading, and the writer's decision. First pass was 43 / mean 26.2 / under-nine 17.3% / caps 8; cut by splitting sentences and dropping four of the name's occurrences.
- Stop-list: this desk 0, community 0, journey 0, NPC 0, "!" 0, stop-phrases 0. Thin-section heading "Beauty, eh" not used before (grep of every `.explicit` h2, 111 headings).
- Card and catalogue fields measured by caps.mjs before filing (see the chain log).
