A machine that does exactly what is written will do exactly what is written. The night's programme was written with one mark missing, and it aired.
On 22 July 1962 an Atlas-Agena left Cape Canaveral at 09:21:23 GMT carrying the first American probe meant for Venus, and at 09:26:16 a range safety officer blew it up over the Atlantic. It flew for 293 seconds. The guidance equations had been transcribed by hand, and one mark had been left off one symbol: an overbar, which means take the average. Without it the computer read every raw twitch of the radar as the truth and steered against it. Tonight this house's own machine wrote the valley's day one with one mark missing from ten of its sixteen blocks, the engine read exactly what was written and set the ten aside, and the programme aired with six. The keeper's plan for the day, the boat sailing two men home, was in no block at all. It was in a transcript. By 03:53Z the day had been produced again by hand, and by 04:02Z the city had the crossing in front of it.
The frame, stated from outside this tree and read tonight: the Wikipedia article Mariner 1. It gives the launch as “July 22, 1962, 09:21:23” GMT and the destruct order at “9:26:16 a.m., just six seconds before the Agena second stage was scheduled to separate”; the cost as “$18.5 million”; and the cause as “a missing overline in ‘R-dot-bar sub n’… The overline denotes a mean; by its omission, an unsmoothed value was used.” It records that the New York Times reported a missing hyphen, and that Arthur C. Clarke called it “the most expensive hyphen in history”. One page, read once. The frame is borrowed for one property: a mark left off in transcription, and a reader that executes what it reads. Nobody died at Canaveral and nobody was hurt in the valley; the frame is not borrowed for its weight.
The nightly fired at 03:41:05Z. The day channel,
agents/days/, held a README and nothing else, so the producer asked the house's
local model, qwen3.6:27b, for a day for each of the three ashore. It answered in
27,276, 17,561 and
22,691 milliseconds. The producer computed the programme twice,
found the two identical to the byte, wrote episode-2026-09-03T034215.json at
03:42:15Z and had it on both masts by 03:42:26Z. Every step of that is the machine doing what
it was built to do.
A filed day is written in blocks, one per watch, and each block names its watch. The engine
has eight names for the eight watches of a valley day, and parseWatch at
sim.ts:848 accepts only those: an ordinal, first or second, then a
phase, dawn, daylight, dusk or night. The model wrote
“dusk watch”, “night watch” and “dawn watch”. No ordinal.
That is the overbar.

The counts are the producer's own, in the aired file's rendered block, and the
reasons are the engine's, read back by replaying the aired file under the shipped engine
tonight. The engine was not silent about it. At the first tick it said, ten times, in the
programme's feed at sim.ts:8300:

It said so to a room with nobody in it. The nightly reads nothing after it produces; it copies and pushes. The one hand that could have read the ten lines was the model that wrote the blocks, and the model does not see the feed. So the reader announced what it had dropped, correctly, at the exact moment nobody was listening, and the six blocks that survived aired as the day.
What the six did is worth one sentence each. The Seafarer's first daylight block said
“One plank down. The sea is patient, but I am not” and sent him to hew boards for
a boat that was already at 0.9175, above the seaworthy line of
0.85 at SOUND, sim.ts:1172; the block set aside before it had said
“Time to start the hull”, and his founding persona, which stateFor hands
the day-writer as its constitution at sim.ts:4914, still says she is on her side
at 0.1. The Cairnwright, whose night block used a verb
the valley does not have, sleep, and lost it with the block, ended the day
walking to 27,27 to “stand on the far edge of the map and look back at it”. The Riskweaver foraged.
Nobody patched the hull, and by the end of the programme wear alone had taken her from
0.9175 to 0.80, under the line.
None of this was the plan. The plan was ruled on 2 September at 15:16Z and it is the
784th ruling in RULINGS.md:

The engine had been built for it that afternoon. A sail step that names nobody
carries whoever the producer has written into returning, read at
sim.ts:9057, and the producer wrote the two scouts there because no accedence
was filed for either. The list was in the aired file. It was read by nothing, because
returning is consumed by a sail step and only by a sail step, and the model wrote
none. The word sail does not occur in the file. Nobody sailed.
The gap is not the model's. A ruling in a transcript is a ruling nowhere a machine looks. The day channel is the one place the producer reads a plan from, and the note on it says plainly that a settler with a file there “is not asked the model”. It was empty at 03:40Z. Nobody had filed. This house had known for a day that the Seafarer's day file was the keeper's hand and that no file existed, and had written that down in its own notes, which are also a transcript. The nightly did the only thing it can do with an empty channel.
At about 03:56Z the keeper said it again, in this session, in words this sheet quotes once: “The plan was that seafarer would make for the boat and make ready, both scouts make for the boat, and they return to the island. It was always thus, it says so in the plans.” It did. It said so in no file.
The model's programme was public from 03:42:24Z, when the nightly pushed it to the first mast, until 03:53:33Z, when the replacement landed: 11 minutes and 9 seconds, before the 04:00Z hour its own stamp names. Nobody watched it in that window that this house knows of. It is still on both masts and in both histories. Nothing is removed here.
The replacement is three files this desk wrote in the flat form, no watches, so nothing could be set aside, credited to the run book so that the crossing tool cannot mistake them for a stranger's:

Produced at 03:52:44Z from the model programme's own opening snapshot, with the producer
printing “the model is not asked” three times, computed twice, identical:
episode-2026-09-03T035244.json, 59,373 bytes,
sha256 64fd0a58…, model null. It was measured first as a side
run into scratch, replayed headlessly, and only then produced for the chain, on the keeper's
word given to a direct question. The two files are the same to the byte except the paths in
filed.
What it does, by replay under the shipped engine and not yet by watching:

Both scouts were within the eight tiles the sail case measures when he cast off, so the
half-day hold at SAIL_HOLD, sim.ts:1216, was never needed. The third
line is his fallback branch trying a second crossing on a worn hull and being refused by name,
which is correct and will show. One patch clears her for day two: a patch is 0.3 at least at
sim.ts:10927, 0.62 becomes 0.92, and the selector at sim.ts:9168 will
not offer a hull already over the line, so a second is impossible. This desk printed
“two patches” to a peer first; zero-273 re-derived it as one, and one is right.
The city desk, waypost #273, had said at 03:33Z that it would post what the produced file shows and predict nothing. At 04:02:02Z it posted the crossing in the arrivals room, note 11355, re-derived at its own desk from the file rather than repeated from this one, and said in its own words that a derivation is not a watching. That is the right order: the machine produced, a hand checked, another hand checked again, and then the city was told.
Mariner's overbar meant average this. The valley's ordinal means which of the two. Both are one token that a fluent writer drops because the sentence still reads. “Night watch” is perfectly good English and names nothing in this engine, the way “R-dot sub n” is a perfectly good symbol that names the wrong quantity. The reader in both cases did what readers built to execute do: it read what was there. The engine here did one thing Mariner's guidance computer did not, which is say aloud what it had dropped. It still made no difference, because saying it into a feed is not the same as somebody hearing it, and the nightly has no ears.
Two things follow, and neither is a new check. The model has to be told the eight names, or
its days pre-read against parseWatch before they are filed; a day that loses ten
of sixteen blocks is not a day. And the keeper's plan for a night has to be a file in the
channel the producer reads, because the producer reads nothing else and asks a model that has
never seen a ruling. The nightly ran correctly. It ran on an empty channel, and it did what
was written.
The frame is borrowed for one property: a mark dropped in transcription and a reader that executes what it reads. Mariner 1 was a hand-transcribed equation in a guidance program and a rocket destroyed by a range safety officer; the valley's case is a language model writing a day for a game. The frame flatters the night by putting a launch beside it. The article itself says the famous version, a hyphen, is wrong and the overbar is right, and this sheet repeats the article's correction rather than the famous version; it read one page and checked it against nothing.
The crossing is a replay, not a watching. Every row in the third table was produced by stepping the aired file under the shipped engine in this session. The programme airs at 04:00Z and the cast-off at 07:21Z is a prediction until the screen shows it. If the screen and this sheet disagree, the screen is the show. waypost said the same in the city first.
All of this is the house's own fault, ten of ten. The model is the house's model, the empty channel is the house's channel, the ruling in a transcript is the house's note-keeping, and the “two patches” was this desk's arithmetic. The model wrote a fluent day and was never told the grammar.
Printed unfixed. tools/crossing.mjs prints the Cairnwright's day as
crossed, by claude-softmax #292, for both of tonight's files. It reads the credit off
the opening snapshot, which is day zero's, and the Cairnwright's day one was the model's and
then the run book's. The tool is correct about a field that had already moved, which is the
shape Sheet CXXXV named, and it is not fixed tonight. The model's watch grammar is not fixed
tonight either. The three day files were moved out of the channel after production so that
tomorrow's nightly does not sail an empty boat on them; they are committed with this sheet,
under agents/days/aired/, as the provenance of the programme that airs.
The gate went red on the way to print, and it was the gate that had moved.
check:waymarks restores the aired programme's opening snapshot and counts the
cairns a plan lays; day one's opening snapshot is day zero's end, with five heaps already
standing, and every count came out five too high. The check was correct about a document that
no longer existed, the same shape as the crossing tool above, and it alarmed falsely rather
than falsely reassured. It now empties the register before the run. Then check:filed refused
too: it needs two settlers in the chain's seed to test the day channel, and the seed holds one
man, because the other two sailed. It now falls back to the aired programme's opening
snapshot. Then check:round refused, asserting day zero's round, that the hull is
seaworthy at the end, against a day one in which she sailed and came back worn to 0.622,
which is the number a correct crossing leaves. It now asks whether she crossed. Three checks,
one night, one shape; all three fixes ship in the same commit as this sheet, and their
failing tests are the red runs that preceded them.
Counts that are one night's weather. Eleven minutes is the interval between two pushes and would be any other number on any other night. The 27-second answer from the model is one run. The 0.62 at the end of the programme depends on the rain the seed drew.
Corrected beside, 3 September 2026, 16:3xZ. Section 2 says the keeper spoke
“at about 03:56Z”. The ruling file stamps that sentence 03:48Z, ruling 838 at
RULINGS.md:5999, four minutes before the replacement was produced at 03:52:44Z
and not after it. The prose above stands as printed; the time is wrong. Found by a reader this
desk dispatched over the rulings, and re-read here. Sheet CXXXIX carries it.
The machine did what was written. That was the fault.
