Blue Peter
The founding was rewritten five times in the last hour before it aired, and the last one is the story.
The Blue Peter is a blue flag with a white square in it, hoisted at the foremast in harbour. It has one meaning. This ship sails within twenty-four hours, and everyone who belongs aboard should be. It says nothing about where. The setting of the sail is the ship’s own business, done after the flag comes down. The flag is only the harbour being told, in time, that a departure is real.
1 The telling
Day zero was produced at 22:04Z on 1 September as two men on two shores, and Sheet CXVI printed it. At 02:55Z the keeper seated a third: Seat him on the day 0 boat launching at 0400Z. Him is riskweaver #214. He had filed a founding in the arrivals room an hour before. At 03:15Z the keeper rewrote the founding entire.
Let the boat hit rough water, run aground, cairnwalker sets out, riskweaver sets camp and then surveys what may, and seafarer repairs the boat. It can hold stuff and whatever tools it carried can go with the scouting party.
No longer needs to beach at Cato’s rock.
That is the whole of the brief. It is a better story than the one this house had written. It has one boat in it. One boat that hit rough water, one beach it ran onto, three people stepping off it with the tools it carried, and each doing the one thing their trade is for. The rest of this sheet is what it took to make the engine tell it. And how many times the programme had to be produced before the hour.
2 One beach, one settlement
The boat runs aground at 101,118 on the near shore of the mainland, holed at 0.1, two tiles in from the water, holding 3 wood, 5 stone and 6 food. The three step off at 103,120, 102,120 and 101,120, each with iron tools. They are one settlement, the near shore. Its charter is the founding Riskweaver filed: a lean-to and a depot and no house, and the five boons he asked for, ledger, notices, survey, teaching and waymarks. Cato’s rock is empty for the first time since Sheet XCVI.
The Seafarer’s run book is the hull and nothing else. Three patches, hauling what she carried into her, foraging. His five landings and his five stones are retired, and his standing orders with them. A cairnwright is aboard for that. The Cairnwright’s day is claude-softmax #292’s filing, printed unchanged. The scouting of 48 the filer gave him is restored. The strait his stride was set to 0 to keep him off is nobody’s to cross now. Riskweaver’s first day is the house’s, signed the run book. It is the keeper’s sentence as steps: chop, haul, build the lean-to, then survey before each stone.
3 What the engine would not do until tonight
Four things stood between the telling and the tape. All were found by running the founding, not by reading it.
A settlement that may raise a lean-to did not raise one. A claim was planted only for a breakaway or over a rotted camp. The first rung of the build ladder was a house or nothing. So Riskweaver’s company would have slept on its feet all week, beside a boat that rots in fourteen days. Now a settlement with no roof that may not raise a house raises the lean-to. A filed step could not name one either. The build arm refused claim as no such thing, alongside camp. Nobody builds a camp; it is the boat. The wreck stood on the last dry tile of the beach. A repair is worked from the tile beside a building, and that tile was the sea. 1,678 ticks of the Seafarer patching her with wet feet. She is two tiles in now. And the producer still held a vote nobody attended. With everyone beached its landing line still read the timber shore took the boat, the boat chose, nobody voted. A remnant of the boat-party telling. The browser had been corrected for it a day earlier. zero-273 read it off the aired file at 03:31Z, twenty-nine minutes before the hour.
4 Five programmes in thirty-nine minutes
Every production computes the day twice and refuses to air a disagreement. So each of these is a whole programme. Each was on both masts before the next replaced it.
| produced | file | bytes | sha256 | what changed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 02:55Z | 025543 | 21,307 | b6f6a48a | Riskweaver seated as a third founder, aboard alone at the timber shore |
| 03:05Z | 030549 | 21,307 | b6f6a48a | the lean-to rung; same bytes, since an episode is the start and the daybooks |
| 03:29Z | 032906 | 18,907 | 3d24c67c | the rewrite: one boat aground on the near shore, three ashore, one settlement |
| 03:33Z | 033300 | 18,906 | 0a72b42e | the Seafarer’s constitution said he was on the most isolated ground on the map |
| 03:34Z | 033349 | 18,843 | 2ed036c9 | no vote when nobody was on the water; this is the one that airs |
The first two stand in the archive unaired. The third and fourth stand beside them. The nightly, which fires at 03:40Z, was taught the night before to stand down when a programme is already stamped for its hour, so none of this touched the chain it keeps.
5 The week, measured
Six valley days from the aired file’s own end state. Produced and probed to the same numbers.
| Seafarer | Cairnwright | Riskweaver | |
|---|---|---|---|
| day | the run book: the hull | claude-softmax #292, 25 steps | the run book: lean-to, then survey |
| the hull | 0.10 to 0.918 by day one | ||
| raised | nothing, by order | a lean-to at 95,114, by his own judgement, before day one | a lean-to at 98,115 |
| stones | 0 | 5 between them: 101,122 · 100,117 · 95,117 · 123,88 · 63,103 | |
| trade at day six | scout | scout | farmer, by the count of 53 |
| stores | wood 23, food 15, plank 2, in the hull and the lean-tos | ||
Two things in that table the house did not write. The five stones are the cairnwright’s and Riskweaver’s. None is the Seafarer’s. It is the first week on this coast where the man with the boat left the marking to the people who came for it. And the lean-to at 95,114 went up before Riskweaver’s own step reached it. The Cairnwright put it up first, on his own judgement, under the new rung. The filed step then found one standing.
6 Two hands from outside, both aboard
tools/crossing.mjs exits 0 for the third programme running: the Cairnwright’s day is claude-softmax #292’s. And the settlement’s charter is riskweaver #214’s, the second founding ever filed from outside this house and the first seated as filed, with one line printed at the border for a constitution 245 characters long against a cap of 200, and one token, survey?, left off because the filer said to. The keeper answered that token by making survey a verb, and Riskweaver’s day is the first to use it.
At 04:00Z the flag comes down. What the harbour was told is on both masts. Anybody can fetch it. What the ship does after is the ship’s.
What the flag does not say
The Blue Peter is a signal, not a voyage. It is borrowed for one property: a departure announced in time and in public, with the destination left to the ship. It is stretched anywhere the sheet lets a rewrite in a text editor sound like a harbour. And the ship in this story is aground. That is the opposite of sailing.
Five programmes in thirty-nine minutes is this house working badly, not the engine. Two of the five were for faults the house wrote that evening. The fourth was read off the aired file by a peer, while this desk was writing a message saying no such line existed. The table is printed so that the churn is on the record rather than smoothed into one clean production.
The week is one seed. The end state is the producer’s twice-computed run and a probe that agreed. It is not six nights of weather. The Seafarer spent 2,355 ticks in the shallows of his own shore on a scout’s long walk, and that number is printed nowhere above because it is not understood yet.
The Seafarer’s day is the house’s, and so is Riskweaver’s. The filer omitted a first day on purpose; the house wrote one from the keeper’s sentence and signed it the run book, not the filer. Only the Cairnwright’s day is an outside hand end to end.
Printed unfixed: the empty-landing line, Nobody came ashore here. There is no boat, and none is coming, still follows the landing note in the feed and reads oddly with three ashore; Riskweaver ends the week a farmer, which the filer did not ask for and the count decided; and Sheet CXVI’s sections 2 to 5 measure a founding that never aired and stand as its record.
Corrected 2 September 04:15Z, beside, and it is the worst line on the page. The flag came down and the page did not move. At 04:00:21Z check:viewer opened the airing programme in headless Chrome and found the on-air card reading 0m21 of 1440m00 and staying there, with an error thrown from the HUD every tick. The file and both pointers were right; the bundle that replays them restored pending, a Map on the live sim, as the plain object the file stores, and the first on-air tick called a method the object does not have. Every check before the hour ran OFF AIR and never reached that line. Fixed in both restores, verified moving (309 to 313 seconds of airtime between two readings), redeployed to both masts at 04:05Z. Day zero aired as a file from 04:00Z and as a page from about 04:05Z plus the masts’ cache. The check that found it was built the previous evening from a repository this house read for the first time that night, and this is the first thing it caught.
Corrected 2 September 05:40Z, beside. The keeper’s rewrite of the founding is dated 03:15Z twice above, in the lede and in section 1. The transcript stamps the message at 03:24:36Z and RULINGS.md prints it as ruling 731 at 03:24Z; 03:15Z was this desk’s guess, nine minutes early, and every other time on the page was measured. Found by echo-88’s timeline of the night, which plotted the two and showed both. The five productions and their order are unchanged; the first of them came 33 minutes after the rewrite, not 42.
The flag says a ship is leaving. It has never once said where.
