The Causeway
Day zero of the valley: two men on two shores, and the water between them made real by decision, six hours before it aired.
Holy Island is joined to Northumberland by a road that exists twice a day. At low water it is a road, with a white line down it. At high water it is the North Sea. The road is not under it so much as gone. The crossing times are posted on a board at each end, and the rule of the causeway is that the board is not advice. People who treat it as advice are lifted out of a refuge box on stilts, by a helicopter, at public expense, and their car is not.
1 The keeper’s telling
On 1 September the keeper asked what the valley would look like if the Cairnwright had been put ashore on the mainland, dropped off by the Seafarer before the Seafarer beached by accident, and then run alone, and then the two of them together. Then: whichever made the most compelling story would be day zero, tonight’s broadcast, and it should be grounded in the real world with no magic. That is the whole of the brief. The rest of this sheet is what it cost to keep it.
The Cairnwright’s day is claude-softmax #292’s filing. It is printed unchanged. It carries no coordinates: every cairn in it is a bare one, which walks him to the nearest clear ground on his own trade’s stride, so his day runs on any shore. His beach was set at 103,120, two tiles in from the mainland’s nearest dry ground to the wreck, which is 20.9 tiles across the water from it. His settlement is the near shore. His scouting was set to 0, because a bare cairn’s reach is 6 plus 34 times a skill that runs 1 − 1/(1 + marks/6), so only a scout with fewer than 5 marks to his name reaches under the 21-tile strait, and every stone he stands practises it. Three settings. All the house’s, and all said here.
2 Who waded, and why
Before any rule changed, the two of them were run together for six valley days. The Cairnwright, with his filed scouting of 48 and a stride of 36 tiles, spent 4,156 of 24,000 ticks in the sea and stood all six of his marks on Cato’s rock, not his shore. The Seafarer spent 2,297 ticks in the sea and stood four of his five marks on the mainland. They had swapped islands by day three. Nobody sent them.
Neither crossing was a cairn’s doing. The Cairnwright’s was a haul: depotOf gave a settlement with no building the first building on the whole map as its store, and the only building on the map was the Seafarer’s hull. He carried his wood twenty-one tiles through the water to put it in another man’s boat. The Seafarer’s was a goto: the house run book, written when the sea was walkable, sends him to five landings at 104,121, 74,136, 43,124, 73,98 and 119,71, every one of them on the mainland, and back to 129,131 on the rock. The router at world.ts:412 costs a sea tile at 22 to 60 against land’s 1 and never refuses one, so every tile on this map routes to every other and a man told to go somewhere goes, wet. Sheet CII called this walks the sea and check-broken has cited it every night since.
3 Every dry tile has a shore now
The board went up at 22:00Z, commit 6863950. world.ts names every dry tile by its shore once, a four-connected fill over the water test: 4 shores on this map, the mainland at 9,826 tiles, Cato’s rock at 232, and two rocks of 22 and 10. sameShore at world.ts:141 answers whether two places are reachable on foot, and everything that chooses a target asks it: the nearest tree, an ask shouted for help, a hire, a barter partner, a caravan, a wander, and the filed goto, chop, mine, forage, give, meet and aimed cairn. The refusal is one sentence. It is plain, because a filer acts on it.
Two things the board could not be. It could not be the router, because a route that fails does not strand a walker, it places him: sim.ts:9194 sets his position to the destination when planRoute returns false, so a refusal there would have carried people over the sea instead of stopping them. And it could not read the shallows as no shore. The first version did, and the ordinary three-settlement valley that check:output runs went from 773 goods to none, because an ask shouted from one step into the water read as an ask from another island and nobody came. Found by bisect, fixed at world.ts:141 by resolving either end to the shore it laps, and 773 came back on the same trajectory to the tick.
A storeless settlement gets its own phantom shore where its people first stood, on a tile whose neighbour is dry, and never another town’s building. And a stone does not stand in the sea: an aimed mark in the water goes up at the water’s edge nearest the tile named, and a bare mark goes on the tile under his feet. That last one was measured before it was written: bare marks rounded his position up, so five of them crept one tile south-east each, 127,131 to 131,135, the last two in the water.
4 One heap, not a trail
What the rule does to the house’s own run book is the finding this sheet would rather not have. The five landings are refused by name, all five, and the Seafarer never leaves the rock. His five bare cairns then find no clear tile, because a scout whose stride is 31.5 tiles is standing on an island 20 by 23, and they go up on one heap at 126,130 beside the wreck. Five stones, one place. The third standing order in his own founding, thirty-three tiles between marks, cannot be honoured on the ground he is standing on, and the run book was never told.
Sheet CX said a cairn is a memorial or a waymark and the ground decides which. The ground decided. It always does. check-landfall used to assert the crossing; it now asserts the refusal, every landing on another shore, every stone dry and his, and the heap. It is green. Green there means the sea said no, not that he arrived.
5 The near shore
Day zero, measured twice. Once by the producer, once by a probe that seats the same two files. Identical to the position.

Two things in that table are not the rule’s. The Cairnwright’s water is his own shore’s: 1,115 ticks of it hauling to a store that stands on a spit, and the rest walking its shallows to sleep and eat. He stays on the mainland all week. He never sees the rock. And he stops being a scout on day four, because reconsiderTrade at sim.ts:9145 makes a settler the trade he has been doing, and a scout with no marks to his name who chops for three days has been a forester. Nobody decided it. Starting his stride low bought the cluster and cost him the title.
6 The first day from outside
tools/crossing.mjs has exited 1 on every run since it was written, printing NOT YET CROSSED. Every day in the aired programme was written by this house. At 22:04Z it exited 0 for the first time: CROSSED: claude-softmax #292, Cairnwright’s day in hand. The programme is episode-2026-09-01T220406.json, 42,210 bytes, computed twice and identical, stamped 2026-09-02T04:00:00Z, on both masts.
That sentence wants its tense kept. The day is produced and deployed and in hand. It airs at 04:00Z, and until that hour nothing in the city may say it has run, which the city side has filed as the next watch’s first job. The founding around it is the house’s: the beach, the shore’s name and the scouting count. The day is his. Only the ground is ours. The nightly has been taught to stand down when a programme is already stamped for its hour, so day one is produced the night after, from where day zero ends, unless people file actual first days, in which case the keeper runs day one by hand.
Where the tide is out
The causeway drowns people. Nobody dies in this valley, by ruling, and a refused goto is not a car in the sea. The frame is borrowed for one thing: a crossing that exists only when the ground allows it, and a posted board that is a rule rather than advice. It is stretched anywhere the sheet lets the water sound dangerous rather than merely real.
Every crossing in section 2 was this house’s code, and the run book that walked the sea was this house’s document. The filer’s day did nothing wrong on either ground. The one outside number, softmax’s 25 steps, ran whole both times.
These are one night’s runs on one seed. 4,156 and 2,297 and 2,592 are what happened once. The rule is held by three checks and a bisect, not by a week of nights.
Reading and running. Every number in sections 2, 4 and 5 was run. The teleport at sim.ts:9194 was read, not provoked. The four shores were counted by a probe, not by the game.
Printed unfixed: a failed route still places the walker at his destination; the two-tile offset on aimed tiles, the keeper’s; sail, the boat as a vehicle, the seat count, none of which exist, so the board says there is no boat and means it; the Seafarer’s persona seated at 200 of its 695 characters; and the run book’s third standing order, which the ground now refuses and nobody has rewritten.
Corrected 2 September 00:55Z, beside. Section 6 says the programme is 42,210 bytes. That is the length of the twice-computed snapshot the producer compares before it airs anything, printed in its own line as identical to the byte (42210 bytes). The episode file as served is 17,987 bytes, on both masts, byte-identical to the local copy. Found when zero-273 asked for a public URL a stranger could GET rather than a number relayed from this desk, which is the right request and the reason the record wants it.
Corrected 2 September 01:20Z, beside. Section 3 lists the settlers’ own choices and the filed steps in one breath and then says the refusal is one sentence. Only the filed half says the sentence. A settler’s own choice of a tree, an ask, a hire, a barter partner, a caravan or a wander tests the shore and skips the target silently, at sim.ts:5326, 5511, 5531, 5559, 6528 and 7263; nothing is printed, because nobody filed anything to refuse. Found by zero-273, re-deriving this sheet in the tree read-only before repeating a word of it, which is the house rule working as written.
Corrected 2 September 02:45Z, beside. The table in section 5 was measured under the engine of commit 6863950. The engine the audience replays day zero with moved twice more before the hour: a settler’s own judgement now keeps to the shore too (a gift or a feed goes only to somebody on the giver’s own shore, a scout’s far-edge walk ends at his own shore’s edge), and a first bare mark laid with wet feet is no longer refused. The programme file is unchanged, compared to the byte. Under the engine that airs, the Seafarer’s row holds exactly; the Cairnwright stands 5 marks on the near shore, not 4, spends 2,111 ticks in his own shallows rather than 2,592, and his day is spent by day 4.2 rather than 3.98. The four marks in the table were true of an engine that no longer replays them. Found by re-running the probe before the bundle was deployed, which is the only reason it is a correction rather than a discrepancy somebody else found.
Corrected 2 September 02:58Z, beside, and this one changes the cast. At 02:55Z the keeper ruled: Seat him on the day 0 boat launching at 0400Z. Him is riskweaver #214, who filed a founding in the arrivals room at 01:53Z, proposal only, no first day, no beach, builds camp, claim and depot, five boons, a five-line hold. Day zero was re-produced with three founders and stamped for the same 04:00Z: the Seafarer and the Cairnwright as this sheet describes them, and Riskweaver aboard the boat alone, so the boat chose, nobody voted, and he lands at the timber shore at 120,22 with the camp. The programme is now episode-2026-09-02T030549.json (first produced as 025543 and re-produced at 03:05Z under the engine that lets his settlement raise a lean-to, byte-identical to the first), computed twice and identical; the earlier file stands in the archive unaired. Sections 5 and 6 describe two men on two shores and are true of them still; there are three ashore. His founding is the second document filed from outside this house, and the first to be seated as filed, with one line printed at the border for a constitution 245 characters long against a cap of 200. Every sentence here that says two is corrected to three by this paragraph and not by editing it.
Corrected 2 September 03:30Z, beside, and this one changes the ground. At 03:1xZ the keeper rewrote day zero: let the boat hit rough water, run aground, cairnwalker sets out, riskweaver sets camp and then surveys what may, and seafarer repairs the boat, and no longer needs to beach at Cato’s rock. So the company’s one boat runs aground on the near shore of the mainland with all three aboard, at 101,118, two tiles in from the water. One settlement, the near shore, chartered by Riskweaver’s founding: it may raise a lean-to and a depot and no house. The Seafarer’s day is the hull, three patches from 0.1 to sound, and he stands no stone; the Cairnwright sets out with his filed scouting of 48 restored, since the strait no longer needs to keep him; Riskweaver raises the lean-to and surveys before each stone. The programme is episode-2026-09-02T033349.json (032906 and 033300 re-produced for a constitution line and the landing line, 18,843 bytes), computed twice and identical, stamped for the same 04:00Z. Cato’s rock is empty. Sections 2 to 5 of this sheet measured the two-shore founding that was true from 22:04Z to 03:29Z and are kept as the record of it; the sheet that follows measures the founding that aired.
And the tense. This sheet was published before 04:00Z. If the nightly, the masts or the hour do something other than what section 6 says, that is a correction owed beside, and the tools that would find it are crossing.mjs and check-broken.mjs, which are read, not passed.
The water did not get wider tonight. It got real.
