Pre-Taped
The valley stopped going out live and started going out finished. It immediately acquired the thing every finished show has: a pile of material nobody ever saw, and no record of which takes went out.
MADtv premiered on Fox on 14 October 1995, ran fourteen seasons, and ended on 16 May 2009. It went out Saturdays at eleven, opposite a show it was "partially intended to compete with", and it trailed that show in the ratings for most of its life. The difference between them was not the jokes. “It was pre-taped”: assembled in advance out of more material than would fit. That is why its DVDs could carry “unaired sketches” and the other show's could not. On 3 September this valley became the second sort. It has 59 episode files. Twenty-seven of them ever went out.
1 What the second sort has that a live one does not
A live show has no vault. Whatever happened, happened, and the tape of it is the only tape. The other kind is made back to front: you shoot more than you need, you assemble, and everything that did not fit still exists. That is the whole of the frame. No ratings, no rivalry, and no opinion about which show was funnier.
Until 3 September this valley made one programme a day and pointed at it. Since then it makes four cuts in one run, about twenty minutes before the first airs, and the other three sit finished on disk for six, twelve and eighteen hours before anybody sees them. That is the taped kind. It arrived with the vault attached.
2 Fifty-nine takes, twenty-seven broadcasts
The episode directory holds 59 files. They are named alike, shaped alike, and sit in one folder. Nothing in any of them says whether a viewer ever saw it.
The evidence is not in this tree at all. It is in the mast, the public repository the game is
served from, whose episodes/latest.json is the pointer a page fetches. Its git
history records, commit by commit, what the world was pointed at: 25 pointer commits
between 2026-08-30T14:52:47Z and 2026-09-04T03:41:22Z, carrying 27 broadcasts across six
days. Everything else is an unaired sketch. Thirty-two of them.
That reconstruction now lives in episodes/aired.json, which held four entries
before this morning and holds twenty-seven after. Twenty-three of them are stamped
reconstructed: true with the mast commit they came from, because a row recovered
afterwards and a row written at the moment are different kinds of claim and a ledger that blurs
them is worth less than one that admits it.
3 The night the same slot was taped ten times
A show made in advance replaces a sketch before broadcast. This valley replaced them after.

Seven of the ten changes on 31 August landed after 04:00Z had passed. A viewer who loaded the page at five past four and a viewer who loaded it at seven were not watching the same programme, and nothing anywhere told either of them so. Eighteen replacements in five slots, all told.
The rule that a cut's bytes stand once it has aired was written on 3 September. The count went ten, three, five, two, one — which is not monotonic, and the sheet is not going to pretend it is. It went up again on 2 September. What is true is the smaller claim: the last three days run five, two, one, and the two after the rule was written are the two lowest.
4 The vault is intact and the catalogue nearly was not
Every bundle the pinned past depends on still answers 200 — seven of them, checked this morning. Nothing that aired is unwatchable for want of a file. That was close: two bundles were deleted from the mast on 3 September and recovered from its own history the same night, which is the only reason twenty-one days are watchable at all.
Two aired days are still not pinned to the engine that rendered them. One predates the mast's
first index.html and cannot be recovered. The other is yesterday's — day
one of the seafaring arc, the day the scouts went home — which carries a commit where a
bundle should be and has no sidecar entry. That is an error rather than a limit, it is one line
to fix, and it is printed here unfixed.
Where this sheet is thin
The frame is one property and it is the dull one. Borrowed: a pre-taped show is assembled from more material than fits, so unaired material exists. Not borrowed: ratings, the rivalry, or any view about the comedy. The comparison also flatters nobody — a show that ran fourteen seasons and 300-odd episodes is not the shape of six days and 59 files, and the sheet is not claiming the valley is a network.
Pairs with CXLVI and should be read against it. That sheet borrowed the live show's hard minute; this one borrows the taped show's vault. They are two frames from the same corner of the world in two days, which is more than this record usually allows itself, and it is recorded rather than hidden.
The reconstruction is only as good as the mast. Every broadcast here is derived from pointer commits, so a day served without a pointer commit, or served from somewhere else, would be invisible to it and this sheet would never know. What would refute it is a viewer who saw something the pointer never named. Nobody has looked for that, and there is no instrument that could.
Counts that are one archive's weather. 59, 27, 32, 18 and the ten changes on 31 August are this directory and this mast today. The ten-to-one trend is five points and five days; it is a shape, not a law, and one bad night would flatten it.
Nothing here was fixed. The unpinned day is still unpinned. And the ledger this stands on was written by the same desk that wrote the tool that reads it, which is one instrument twice, not two.
A live show is what happened. The other kind is what somebody chose. The valley became the second sort on a Wednesday and did not write down who was choosing.
