A ship's day is cut into an odd number of watches so that nobody stands the same one twice running. The valley's day is now cut into four, and the cuts open at noon and at midnight.
At sea the day is not divided evenly. Five watches of four hours and two of two, the dog watches, from four in the afternoon to eight, make seven in a day rather than six, and the reason is arithmetic rather than tradition. With an even number every sailor would stand the same hours every day of the voyage. With an odd number the rota slips by one watch each day, and the man who had the middle last night has the morning tonight. Nobody is owed the same hours twice. The keeper ruled this evening that the valley's twenty-four-hour programme becomes four cuts of six hours, produced in advance as a chain from one opening, each replaceable until it airs and never afterwards. A six-hour cut is a valley day and a half. So cuts one and three open at valley noon and cuts two and four at valley midnight. A day filed in blocks reads differently in each. Built and gated tonight. From tonight's filed day, the four cuts end where the single programme ends, to the byte. From a busier day they do not. The reason is the cut itself.
The frame, stated from outside this tree and read tonight: the Wikipedia article Watch system. The traditional naval day “consisted of 5 four-hour periods and 2 two-hour periods”: first watch 20:00 to midnight, middle, morning, forenoon, afternoon, then the first dog watch 16:00 to 18:00 and the second 18:00 to 20:00. “One watch is split into two shorter watches so that there is an odd number each day. Doing so allows crew members to have a different watch schedule each day. Often, the dog watches are set at dinner time to allow the entire crew to be fed in short order.” Eight bells, one for each half-hour of a four-hour watch. One page, read once; it gives no origin for the name. The frame is borrowed for one property: a day cut into periods whose count does not divide the day evenly, so the same hour of the clock falls in a different watch from one day to the next. Nobody is harmed by a rota and nobody was harmed in the valley.

Four cuts of 21,600 ticks. That is six real hours, 300
sim-seconds, 6,000 steps of a twentieth, and one and a half valley
days. They air at 04:00, 10:00, 16:00 and 22:00Z. One run at 03:40Z produces all four as a
chain. Cut one opens from the seed as before. Each later cut opens by restoring the previous
cut's end into a fresh world, the way a viewer restores a file, so every cut is playable on its
own and the link between two is a thing a check can measure. Each is still computed twice and
refused on disagreement. Each file carries its window (aired_at,
ends_at), the hour it was computed, the hash of the file it opened from, the
engine that ran it, and one plain sentence: it may be replaced until twenty minutes before it
airs, and not after. Twenty minutes is not taste. The masts' host caches every file for ten.
A re-cut inside that band gives two viewers two different cut threes.
The pointer keeps naming cut one as episode, and that is deliberate. The
accedence tool hashes the file the pointer names and marks a resident's filing bad against any
other, and a returned settler is the consequence. A pointer that changed identity four times a
day would send people home by filename. Beside it now sits cuts[], and the page
picks the cut whose window holds the wall clock, reloads at the boundary, and shows a plain
off-air line for a cut that was never produced rather than a neighbour's valley in its costume.
Unaired cuts are served at next.json, marked provisional. The loader that chooses
the engine picks the same cut by the same eight lines, because the chooser cannot live inside
the bundle it chooses.
A valley day is 200 sim-seconds and a cut is 300. Measured at each cut's opening in the dress run, sim time modulo the day: cut one 0.05, cut two 100.05, cut three 0.05, cut four 100.05. Noon, midnight, noon, midnight. Never a sunrise. A day filed in the block form names its blocks by the hour, first daylight, second dusk, and readDay installs whatever falls inside the cut. A scratch day of eight blocks attached to cut two installed 8 of 8 and was seen out at step 4,228 of 6,000. The last half day of the cut was the settler's own. That is the dog watch. The keeper chose six hours knowing it. The navy's answer is the one that applies: not to fight the odd count, but to write days that know which hour they open on. The day-writer's brief now says so.
The single programme this replaces was 101,737 bytes. The four cuts of the same day are 102,029, 101,377, 101,403 and 101,363, which is 406,172 a day, four openings carried instead of one. The producer took 12 seconds for all four, and the bundle it builds to pin the engine takes under one.
The keeper's word, relayed by the city desk at about 21:25Z and quoted once: “We should take it as a test to ensure the 4 cut ends up the same place as the one shot.” Run at this desk from a copy of tonight's seed with the filed day-two file, both ways, then each replayed to its end under the shipped engine and compared field by field:

Green for tonight. The sheet would be dishonest to stop there. Tonight's day is a weak test: the Seafarer patches, builds his dock and casts off inside cut one, and cuts two to four are an empty coast with nobody to re-plan. The builder ran the same comparison from day one's opening, three settlers walking and no filed days. The two runs were identical at the first boundary and apart by 23.57, 53.97 and 3.16 tiles at step 12,000. Cut two opened on exactly the single run's state at step 6,000 and still diverged. A cut opens by restoring a snapshot, and a restore throws every route away and lets every settler plan again from where they stand. A viewer who reloads the page gets the same treatment. So the four-cut day is not the single day re-serialised. It is a day with three reloads in it. The keeper's test is a check that goes red on any day with somebody walking across a boundary. That is a fact for the keeper. Whether a reload is a fair thing to happen to a settler four times a day is theirs to say.
The second ruling of the evening, in four words: “Hold it to UTC no daylight savings change.” The nightly task fired at 23:40 local, which is 03:40Z while summer time holds and 04:40Z from 1 November, forty minutes after the hour it produces for, and the script would then have computed tomorrow's 04:00Z and left today dark with a green log. Windows fires tasks on local time and nothing else. So the task fires every hour at forty past, and the script decides. Unless the UTC hour is three it writes one line and stands down. Run by hand at 21:42Z tonight it wrote “not the production hour (21:42Z); nothing to do” and exited 0. A second guard asks a different question of the same hazard. It refuses if the hour it would produce for is more than an hour away.
The count of checks is 46. Two are new and both were made to fail first: the chain link, which went red when cut three was moved three tiles and when an hour of dead air was put between two windows; and the seal, which re-hashes every aired cut and went red on one changed byte. The seal's second instrument reads git for the commit that introduced the file. Tonight it matched nothing. Nothing has aired under this rule yet, and it says so instead of agreeing. Two faults found on the way and fixed: a reload that would have fired for ever after the last cut ended, invisible to any check that runs in Node, and a check that had asked the run book's broken conditions of a programme nobody watched, because it never applied the filed days.
The frame is borrowed for one property, an uneven division of the day that moves the same hour into a different period, and it flatters the valley. The navy chose seven on purpose so the rota would slip. The valley's slip is six hours not dividing three valley days. One page was read tonight and checked against nothing else.
Nothing here has aired. Every number is a dress run. It ran to scratch under tonight's engine, and the checks ran in a worktree. The first cut airs at 04:00Z on 4 September if the keeper lets the nightly produce four, and the city's notice keeps the words NOT YET BUILT until this desk says a cut has aired. The 8 of 8, the step 4,228 and the 23.57 tiles are the builder's and are printed carried; the compare and the sizes are this desk's.
Whose faults. The reload loop and the check that never applied its days are the house's. The dog-watch phase is nobody's fault and is the ruling's cost, named before the first cut airs. The divergence across a boundary is the design's, restored rather than continued, and it is the same treatment a viewer's reload has always given a day.
Unfixed and ruled unfixed. Days two to four carry no filed day unless a file names its cut. A re-cut cannot be rehearsed off to one side because a side run writes no pointer. The hourly task is a registration on one machine and is written down, not tested across the November change. The 21 old days pinned to two bundles somebody deleted from the mast stay unpinned.
The ship keeps an odd number of watches so that no one keeps the same one for ever. The valley keeps four, and will find out who does.
