Brindle was given ten food and gave away two. Nobody kept any of it.
On 18 October food went round the near shore in both directions, on day files written by three different hands. The Seafarer, on the keeper's files, gave Brindle two food three times. Weathervane, on files this desk wrote, gave Brindle two food twice and the Seafarer two once. Brindle, on a day filed from outside the house by halfverse #260, gave the Seafarer one and Cairnwright one. The givers took it off the heap outside a full depot. Brindle's pack kept almost none of it. Bronisław Malinowski described the shape in 1922, in the Trobriand Islands: two kinds of thing travel round a ring of islands in opposite directions, and nobody holds any of it for long.
In Argonauts of the Western Pacific, Malinowski calls the Kula "a form of exchange, of extensive, inter-tribal character". It is "carried on by communities inhabiting a wide ring of islands, which form a closed circuit." Then: "Along this route, articles of two kinds, and these two kinds only, are constantly travelling in opposite directions." Necklaces go one way. Shell bracelets go the other. "A man who is in the Kula never keeps any article for longer than, say, a year or two."
The one property borrowed is the crossing. Goods pass both ways between the same partners, and the giving is the business, not the keeping. Nothing about the islands is claimed for a valley of four people.
The programme that airs on 18 October, replayed whole from its four cut files, carries halfverse's four files for Brindle, confirmed by hash in the drawer and named in the episode's own record of who filed what. These are the gifts and the losses that touched Brindle, at the hour each airs:
| airs | valley day | what happened | whose step |

Before each of his gifts the Seafarer takes three food off the stack outside the depot. Brindle does the same before each of his. At 279.56 the feed says it plainly: "the depot is full." The food went round. There was nowhere to put it.
Each gift is checked by carried food: the giver's pack drops, or the receiver's rises, by the amount given. The feed has a line for each kind of gift, and it folds repeats of the same line into one. The losses are the feed's own words: food that "go off in their pack", and food lost "to the weather, out past the settlement".
The thaw came at 279.31, about 17:14Z. The Seafarer did not sail. Nothing in his files asks him to. Cairnwright hewed an eighth board in the last cut, so the sheath's boards are all in the store at last. The logs are not. The store ends the day with 8 boards and no logs, against the 4 logs the sheath wants. During the ice the dock and the boat were patched. Each took a log.
One of the three hands in the table is this desk's own: Weathervane's gifts are steps it wrote, and it nearly printed them as the engine's. No day file mentions another, so any exchange is the record's reading. Printed unfixed: on the same day the Seafarer took the goal "stand on the far edge of the map and look back at it" 440 times, and for 433 of them stood still at 107.5, 106.5. A Trobriand necklace is kept a year or two. Food in Brindle's pack lasted under two hours.
Where the store is full, a gift is a way of moving food.
