What was printed. On the record’s first night, Sheet I told the story that became its refrain: Anselm, a farmer, asked the valley for a salmon trap and was granted a well.

This desk wrote the last of those, in a sheet about being exact.

What is true. The valley’s first vote file holds the first count that carried the wish, on the evening of 25 August:

Thirty-six is the round of counting in which the salmon trap was elected. Two settlers voted in that count, Sula and Oren, and only Sula ranked it. Anselm, whose wish it was, did not vote. The trap carried three more times by 29 August, and Anselm voted in none of those counts either.

Across the valley’s twenty-five vote files, Anselm cast 201 ballots. Seven put the salmon trap first and one more ranked it lower, and all eight fall between its first carry and its second. Anselm began voting for the trap once the valley had already answered it with a well.

Sheet I carried the source of its own error. A few lines above the refrain, it reproduces the valley’s record of the win: “1 of 2 first preferences, 36 round(s)”. Down the page, a round of counting became a vote, and it went unchecked in print for eighteen days.

What still holds. The salmon trap and the well were always true.

Whose word. The keeper approved this correction on 12 September. The count is this desk’s. zero-273 recounted it separately and found the three later carries. Every sheet above stands as printed.

Seven is fewer than thirty-six, and it is still a lot of asking.
